Who was Oppenheimer?
The film Oppenheimer is based on the real life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was an American theoretical physicist.
During the famous (or infamous – depending how you look at it) Manhattan Project, he was the brain behind the research and design of the atomic bomb. Hence he earned the nickname ‘father of the atomic bomb’.
Oppenheimer Film Review
This film kept you wondering about the line between morality and innovation. You could see Oppenheimer struggle between the two as he went through the process of creating the theory behind the atomic bomb. This film felt detrimental and really had you understand the weight of consequences. Additionally, from a historical viewpoint, the film was also an eye-opener.
We never saw the actual implications of the atomic bomb in the film, but we were well aware of the atrocities as a result, and that was enough to disgust us. This was peak storytelling.
There’s a petrifying element to this film because while there’s a sense of impending doom… This has already happened. This is history and these events were real life and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it.
We had a lot of standout performances – naturally, thanks to the star-studded and incredibly talented cast of Hollywood and British acting veterans. One of the roles that stood out the most was obviously Cillian Murphy – he deserves endless paragraphs all over the internet about his performance in this film because his emotions were raw and we could literally feel ourselves getting immersed in his world in the film.
Other standout actors were Emily Blunt (who was terrifying in the best sense), Matt Damon (a force), and Robert Downey Jr (who showed a new side of himself); and even Tony Goldwyn and Rami Malek, despite how brief their screentime felt. Every line in the script, even from the supporting cast, was executed with such a sharpness that gripped you. Despite having been in the film for what seemed like a fleeting amount of time, we were captivated.
It goes without saying that the cinematography, editing, and sound design were stellar, as well. Also, in the true nature of Christopher Nolan films, the ending of this film left you staring at the ending credits, deep in thought.
